Voters in Switzerland on Sunday approved a referendum to ban the building of new minarets on mosques, which the right-wing parties that sponsored the referendum said are a symbol of Islamic law and segregation.
More than 57 percent of voters and 22 of the country’s 26 cantons, or provinces, approved the referendum, reports the BBC.The Swiss government had opposed the ban, saying it would harm the country’s image, particularly in the Muslim world.Switzerland is home to some 400,000 Muslims and has just four minarets.Muslim leaders from around the world condemned the vote.
