Delhi government officials say they intend giving time to Delhiites to "settle into the situation" and make alternative arrangements.
Traders are complaining that no viable alternative has been made available to them. "Jute and cloth are expensive options for retailers. Paper is not a suitable medium for everyone. How are we to put goods like liquids or semi-solid food in paper or cloth!
The government says there are plenty of options and there is an urgent need to change the mindset of people. "We have been encouraging the use of cloth and jute as much as possible. Paper recycling is another inexpensive and environment friendly method. It might take time but it is essential.
If anyone guilty of breaking the ban faces a maximum penalty of Rs 1 lakh or five years’ imprisonment or both.
Now If you are still carrying groceries or vegetables from the market in plastic bags or using them to dispose of your garbage, you run the risk of a jail term or fine, or both. So while you are going to the market, make sure that you are carrying a cloth or jute bags.
This ban on use of plastic bags will create a good demand for eco friendly carry bags like paper bags, jute bags, cotton bags and other bags made up of natural and eco friendly fibers and substances which do not have any harmful effect on the environment..
