Today we can view the fruits of their research, as scientists now confirm that they have managed to grow a form of meat in a laboratory for the first time. Researchers from The Netherlands extracted myoblast cells from the muscle of a live pig; cells that in the right environment would grow into muscle in order to repair damage to tissue, and incubated them in a nutrient-based solution derived from the blood of animal foetuses. The result was what has been described as “a soggy form of pork” which, due to laboratory rules hasn’t been sampled for taste yet. By the Delhi government unravels a shocking tale of hunger, poverty and a public distribution system mired in corruption. Out of 39 lakh individuals surveyed, almost 19 lakh most of them needy did not have ration cards and, in turn, no access to subsidized food grains or recognized proof of identity. Carried out under the Mission Convergence programme, the survey aimed at identifying the vulnerable and building a database for targeted intervention. Individuals in nine lakh households across slums, JJ clusters and resettlement colonies were surveyed in two phases. The data shows that almost 49% of the 55,608 differently-able surveyed were without ration cards. Of 81,618 widows, 33.5% did not have ration cards while out of 97,823 women-headed households 34.6% had no cards. The Central government's PDS programme has set a fixed limit for each state in terms of granting a subsidy for ration. The new integrated terminal at the IGI Airport which will become operational before next year's Commonwealth Games, will also boast of India's largest multi-level car parking with a capacity of over 4,300 vehicles, taking the total parking capacity of the airport to about 6,500 vehicles. At present, the domestic and international terminals have a combined capacity of 2,200 vehicles. With traffic expected to grow as the Games nears, and the new terminal catering to both domestic and international operations, the airport will have a capacity of 60 million passengers per year. The five-storied building is being built on a 19.263 sq m area and is expected to be complete by March 31. Each subsequent floor will be 19,155 sq m. This is the first time that such an incident has taken place in a State Government-run school.The mid-day meal scheme is on in 1,162 such schools. Nearly 80 students of a government-run school were taken ill after consuming the mid-day meal at Trilokpuri in the trans-Yamuna area on Wednesday. The contractor has been blacklisted. According to the police, the incident took place around noon when the students of Sharda Sen Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya started vomiting and complained of headache and nausea after consuming the mid-day meal. They were taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where ten of them were kept under observation while the rest were discharged. The police have registered a case after getting the medico-legal certificates of the students. The police later raided the kitchen of the NGO Rao Raghuvir Seva Samiti that had prepared the meal in Khichdipur and found that the food contained a dead lizard. The government is set to dilute its holding in Steel Authority of India Ltd by 20%. While the company will make a fresh issue of 10% equity, the government will divest 10% of its stake. At current prices, the combined 20% sale would raise almost Rs 17,000 crore from the market. The fresh issue will be used to part-finance SAIL’s Rs 70,000-crore expansion program. Steel minister Virbhadra Singh, in a written statement to the Lok Sabha, said the disinvestment would be in two tranches of 10% each, and be a mix of fresh issue and sale of government shares. At least 15 people have been killed, including three police officers, and 31 others wounded after a suicide bomber targeted a crowded area in southwest Afghanistan. The bomber struck in Farah province in an area where lorries were being loaded up with goods travelling to Herat, police said on Friday. Rohul Amin, the Farah governor, said the deadly blast occurred about 50 metres from his compound. More than a dozen were critically injured so "the death toll may rise", he added.
